With 1200 miles of shoreline and 185,000 acres of surface there is no doubt that Toledo Bend is one big watering hole! Truth is, it’s the largest man-made body of water in Texas, the largest in the south and the 5th largest in the United States! We’re real proud of the fact that we teamed up with our neighbors in Louisiana and built the dam with no assistance from the Federal government. As a matter of fact, the best anyone can figure, the State of Texas chipped in around $70 million for the project!
It’s interesting that when the two states began the search for their funding, Louisiana tapped into an unexpected resource! The state had a pension-fund tax that had been established in 1890 for Louisiana’s Civil War Veterans. There was only one remaining Civil War widow in the state when the funding search began in the mid 1950s, and the Louisiana voters approved use of those funds for the project!
First time visitors are typically amazed at the actual size of the lake and don’t have a clue where to start! It can be overwhelming but don’t worry! I know my way around so I’ll just pick a starting point and travel until we find what you’re looking for! But then there are those who have been visiting this lake since they were a kid, or have family or friends here and know exactly where they want to be! For that reason, the areas are broken down to help you quickly search for the home or land you want in the exact location you prefer!
North Toledo Bend covers Shelby County and homes in the Milam community!
Mid Toledo Bend covers all of the area between the Pendleton Bridge to Jack’s 944 Marina just outside of Hemphill and includes Hemphill and the popular Lowe’s Creek area.
South Toledo Bend, a favorite for our residents visiting from the Golden Triangle, includes the Six Mile Community, Fairmount Community, Burkeville and Wiergate!
Happy hunting! And when you find what you’re looking for – give me a call and get on down here! I’ve got the keys and I’ll be happy to unlock the door!
